Abstract: The recent breakthrough on the transparent ceramics fabrication technology makes it possible to sinter high optical quality transparent ceramics and fabricate various rare-earth ions doped ceramic laser gain media. Since many years we have been intensively working on the transparent laser ceramics fabrication and ceramic lasers development. Over the years we have successfully fabricated high optical quality various rare-earth ions doped YAG, LuAG, and Y2O3 laser ceramics. Using the laser ceramics fabricated in-house we have also developed different wavelength highly efficient, high power, ceramic lasers, either operating in the CW or in the pulse mode. In this talk we will present our research works on the transparent laser ceramic fabrication and ceramic laser development. The possible future development of the laser ceramic fabrication and ceramic laser development will also be discussed.

Biography: D. Y. Tang received B.Sc. degree in physics from Wuhan University, China in 1983, M.Sc. degree in laser physics from the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Science in 1986 and Ph.D. degree in laser physics from the Hannover University, Germany in 1993. From 1993 to 1994, he worked as a scientific employee at the Physikalisch-Technische Budesanstalt (PTB), Braunschweig, Germany. From 1994 to 1997 he was a university Postdoctoral Research Fellow, and from 1997 to 1999 he was an Australian Research Council (ARC) Postdoctoral Research Fellow, both at the University of Queensland, Australia. From 1999 to 2000 he was a Research Fellow in the Optical Fiber Technology Center (OFTC), the University of Sydney, Australia. Since July 2000 he has been an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Prof. Tang’s current research interests are in the areas of transparent ceramics and ceramic lasers, ultrafast lasers, fiber lasers and photonics applications of 2D nano-materials. Prof. Tang has published over 300 international journal papers with an H-index of 44. He is an associated editor for the international journals of Optics Express and Optical Engineering.
